This year our annual lobster diving trip (Bugtoberfest) was cancelled due to the tragedy that befell the Conception dive boat back in September. At my suggestion, the boys and I settled for a 3 day backpacking trip across Catalina to replace the dive trip. We hiked from 2 Harbors to Avalon stopping Shark Harbor and Hermit Gulch campgrounds. The 2nd day was a 14 mile slog that took us all of the daylight hours. I had ridden this general route a couple times by bike already but it was nice to get a hiker’s perspective. Many portions of the Trans Catalina Trail are only accessible by foot. Lots of buffalo were spotted which I found much more worrisome with 50 lbs of crap on my back.
