Ha Noi

Laura and I just returned from our first international trip since 2018! Vietnam was the destination and was quickly decided upon in the Fall of last year. It had been high on our list after seeing the highlights from our friends’ Vietnam trip several years ago. Personally, I was in it for the food! Vietnamese cuisine has so many cultural influences, layered flavors, and fresh ingredients. The country also has a fascinating history that I knew even less about than I thought.

Our first stop in Vietnam was the capitol city of Hanoi. We afforded ourselves 2 full days in the city. The first day was spent wandering around the “Old Quarter” while recovering from jet lag, browsing outdoor markets, and eating street foods. Although it was damp, we made the most of it and enjoyed meals of Banh Mi (baguette sandwich), Bun Cha (pork noodle bowl), Cha Ca (fish noodle), and Banh Xeo (savory pancake). I also bargained for a snack of Longans (a tropical fruit comparable to lychee) at one of the markets.

On our second full day, we met up with some university students at the Temple of Literature. These students were part of an organization called “Hanoi Kids” that give free walking tours of the city. It’s an opportunity for them to practice their English skills and teach us about their country. At the end of the ‘free’ tour we donated some dong to their organization. Our guides were Alexander and Iris (their chosen western names). They did a great job and in addition to giving us some great history on Vietnam, also shared their personal thoughts and opinions on modern life in Vietnam. Such as, is Ho Chi Minh’s real body really in that mausoleum…?
