Laura and I were solidly Halloween Grinches when it came to celebrating Halloween in our child-free years. I think it was the frat-party side of Halloween and our introverted proclivities that left us perfectly happy with staying in for the holiday. But… kids change all that. This year Lucy understood the Trick-or-Treat concept. Also, her recognition of pop culture characters made the costuming part a lot more fun.
I seized on her love of Sesame Steet to design a Cookie Monster and Gonger family costume. Lucy was Cookie Monster, I was Gonger, and Laura was our missing ingredient, watermelon. We visited about a dozen houses within our new neighborhood to collect sweet treats we didn’t really need. There were plenty of houses to visit but to my surprise, there was not a lot of other trick-or-treater traffic. We only had about 5 visits to our house. I hope that changes as the age demographic in the neighborhood skews younger.
In addition to Halloween night, we did some celebrating the weekend before with a pumpkin carving party at the Morales house.
